What is the best time of year to go scuba diving in Mauritius?

Diving in Mauritius is good all year, and for very different reasons. If you are a new diver, the calm ocean surface, normal lack of current and the protective surrounding barrier reefs and easy accessibility to the dive sites makes it an ideal place to learn to dive. The shallow reefs are close to shore, so there is no difficult or demanding boat trip. So diving is possible year-round. The ocean temperature has a variation of 24-25 degrees in the winter when I wear a 5 ml wetsuit to 27-29 degrees in summer, where many divers dive in shorties.

Mauritius is fabulous for learning to dive, and as for training, PADI recommends Mauritius for training because of the incredible variety of dive sites. Wrecks, reefs, drift dives, coral identification opportunities, photo ops, walls, sharks, coral identification and rare and endangered species all form part of the Mauritius offering.

Wreck diving in clear water November

If you are a photographer or videographer, and you want clear visibility, the best time to come diving in Mauritius is between November and May, when the plankton blooms are over, and the ocean is clean and clear. Mauritius has some marine animals that are not seen anywhere else in the world, and it is a photographer’s paradise for the sheer beauty of its reef structures.

Some reefs look like oil paintings. This year 2025 we did not have a plankton bloom, so sea conditions were breathtaking in cool water, with magnificent rays and shoals, even in winter. Visibility on Round Island was 120 metres.

If you want to see massive shoals and plenty of big action, then May to August is incredible. The visibility is not as clear, and around 20-40 metres but the action is more dramatic. Huge shoals of fusiliers are attracted by the plankton. Big tuna and kingfish are hunting, and the ocean is pulsing with marine life. Then the whales appear, and the dolphins start to chase the shoals. This is an exciting time to dive in Mauritius.

Mauritius this is an island that is subject to tidal variation with a certain amount of current, wind and weather variation. Most important, it’s a distant destination. Book for at least 2 weeks if you want to enjoy the best of Mauritius.

As one of the worlds most dangerous sports scuba divers need to look at safety protocols, and Mauritius has these in abundance. The controlling body is the Mauritius Tourism Authority. All diving is by boat in Mauritius, and they inspect boats and issue licences, inspect diving centres premises, equipment, staff certifications, tank certifications, compressor registrations and issue licences.
