When you have dived for 30 years, and love diving, you become complacent in your pristine marine world. Scuba diving in Mauritius is joyful right now, as the safety standards, PADI Standards, CMAS and MSDA inspections and conservation practices make diving in Mauritius a uniquely breathtaking experience.

The long period without fishing have given us stunning corals, the enthusiastic Coast Guard protection has held off the poachers so we have beautiful shoals and the 2025 dramatic La Nina year has guaranteed a crystal clear ocean.

But its an absolute inspiration when someone from Green Fins approaches you for information.

Primarily concerned with the impact of divers on coral reefs, Green Fins is a pain in the neck, a demanding and incessant insistent baby that constantly wants attention, information, more posts and continuous up dates.

But wow, do those guys inspire you to do better!

Ocean Spirit Scuba Diving has grown in its commitment to promote the core principles of

conservation, humility, respect, family values and career development within the

company. And our hard won ECO Centre Rating from PADI has inspired us to certify more divers and share our beautiful world with another generation.

We work within the Mauritian Government parameters to preserve the marine environment. The

Fisheries and Marine Resources Protection Act of 2023 of Mauritius does just that on

paper, but as a government department it relies on administrators, and its reach into

the community is limited.

The objectives of Act (1) The general objective of this Act shall be to ensure the long-

term conservation, management and development of fisheries and aquaculture in

Mauritius while safeguarding the marine resources, biodiversity, environment and

ecosystems for the benefit of the people of Mauritius. This is a 200-page document if

you want to take a look.

With our commitment to inform and enlighten the diving community about scuba

diving in Mauritius while we promote the Conservation narrative, Ocean Spirit is

assisting the government in its objectives by sharing information and promoting the

accomplishments of both government personnel and by encouraging the Mauritian

population to enjoy looking at fish, rather than serving it in the restaurants.

As a scuba diving centre, a PADI Eco Centre, a registered MQA Training Centre, with Project Aware and a PADI Green Star and a passion for diving Ocean Spirit has been awarded the

prestigious Most Educational Ocean Awareness & Conservation Centre –

Mauritius Award in 2023 and 2024 and Ocean Spirit believes that Conservation begins with children

Conservation starts with our children

We were nominated by Mauritius Tourism in 2024 for a Marine Conservation award.

The awards were presented by the Minister of Tourism, showing the commitment of

the government of Mauritius to Marine Conservation.

My videos on the Ocean Spirit YouTube Channel have reached 3 million views,

which is surprising for videos of fish! (There is not a single politician on our YouTube

Channel either, apart from the Wakashio files). The written narrative on our Youtube Chanel posts serve to provide information about the issues affecting our marine world.

So life was great until World Oceans Day, our 3 new interns and Patrick our new manager PADI manager decided to register on the World Oceans Day site, making us the only site in Mauritius on the global map. On Sunday the team took new Discover Scuba divers to look for debris under the ocean, and returned empty handed.

But the marine life was busy with Clownfish doing their part.

So we rarely find rubbish on our reefs and dive sites.

But the beach cleanup crew had more success.
